This is an awesome 12" from Texas based DJ Chicken George released on the Swedish Brandy label. You get four lush downtempo tracks from US underground producers Take, Hydroponic Sound System and Malcolm Kipe. The quality shines through and the vibe feels European! Another pearl for the downtempo DJ box.

Shine: One Day EP

Paris based trio Shine blend trip-hop, downbeat and jazz to give us the sublime One Day EP. Moroccan born Hanane Laraki has a haunting ethereal voice that lends itself to the trip-hop vibe. Sadly this self produced EP is sold out but Shine are currently working on a full length CD. The superb first track, Ashbury, can be heard on the compilation CD Millenium Jazz Vol. 5. The Forget and Remember LP can be labelled as instrumental hip-hop but it has real crispy, funky flavour and a magical range of sampling that betrays techno, disco, funk and jazz influences. Troublemakers: Express Way

This album is the follow-up to the excellent Doubts and Convictions and is the first album the Troublemakers have released on the Blue Note label. The album has a real Blaxploitation feel and successfully blends downtempo beats, funky grooves and hip-hop to create a fresh vibrant sound.

Jazzflora: Scandinavian Aspects of Jazz

This compilation album showcases the great new sounds coming out of Scandinavia. The Nordic countries have a great jazz tradition and now young musicians are blending jazz with electronic music to gives us some dope nu jazz.

Mawglee: The Out of Luck EP

This EP from Mawglee on the Bastard Jazz label is a 'must have' for downtempo DJs. "So Out Of Luck" is a funky, quirky midtempo track with lusty guitar riffs, a big drum break, and crackling, timeworn vocal samples. There is a top remix by Austrian duo Ed Royal and Enne. "Sofa" with its driving bassline and drums is classic downtempo and the remix by New York CIty's Zeb is awesome. Check out Mawglee's website where you will find some excellent free downloads.

Skalpel: Skalpel

A wonderful debut album from the Polish outfit Skalpel. True to their Polish jazz roots Skalpel deliver a melodic, dreamy electro-jazz masterpiece. If you like Cinematic Orchestra you will feel this.

Joseph Malik: Diverse

If you imagine Amp Fiddler with the funk toned down and some downtempo feeling added to the mix then you'll be digging this. This is moody and magnificent music - very expressive. Malik comes from a DJ background but here the focus is on real songs and real music played by real people.

Diplo: Florida

An absolutely amazing debut CD on the Big Dada label from Diplo that is both beautiful and ecstatic. It is a cross between trip-hop and abstract hip-hop and the range of clever sampling is simply breath-taking.

Switchstance Recordings: Fantastic Freeriding 2

This excellent compilation CD comes from Switchstance Recordings who are a highly respected network of German DJs, musicians and producers. It is a fine collection of tunes ranging from mellow downtempo to nu-jazz to dope beats.

TM Juke: Maps From The Wilderness

Soulful and atmospheric, this debut album from TM Juke is available on the excellent Tru Thoughts label. Mainly downtempo with strong trip-hop and hip-hop influences, the album features guest appearances from Alice Russell and Canadian MC's Bread and Water.

Lukas Nystrand: The Fruit of Our Hard Work

This EP from Lukas Nystrand highlights his great skill in selecting samples and creating a totally innovative and addictive sound. It is unclassifiable and all the better for it. Smooth: An Electro-Soul Experience

This is the first CD from French trio Smooth. We first heard them when they were supporting Amp Fiddler on his French tour and we were absolutely blown away. Their funky, soulful music is clearly influenced by the 1970's but sounds fresh and modern. This excellent CD is currently available from the Smooth website and from Amazon France.
